Bones have the ability to provide numerous uses besides their primary biological function. Unfortunately, many slaughterhouses don’t utilize bone co-products which cause huge waste issues and is a waste of usable resources. It is only after bone has been processed that it can be used to create valuable materials.
Most processed animal bones are made into bone powder or bone paste, which is later applied to various different uses such as condiments, health-care products, nourishment, animal feeds, and industrial raw materials.
The bones from slaughtered animals are still used to this day for different applications. In the past, they were often used for making tools. In more modern times, bones are used to help craft objects such as buttons, beads, handles, bobbins, calculation aids, head nuts, dice, poker chips, pick-up sticks, ornaments, bone glue, and much more.
Bone glue and gelatin are made by boiling the ground or cracked bones, followed by filtering and evaporation to thicken the fluid. Gelatin is further processed from that point by thickening and drying the fluid.
Ground bone is often made into bone meal and is used as organic fertilizer due to its high concentration of phosphorus and nitrogen. It can also be used as an additive in animal feed.
